The blues is the foundation of so much modern music. This course helps you understand how the blues works, from the 12-bar progression to the shuffle feel, and gives you the vocabulary to start playing blues with confidence and personality.

Prerequisites
You should be comfortable changing between basic open chords. This is not a first-ever guitar course.

Understanding the 12-bar blues and I-IV-V progression

Shuffle rhythm and acoustic blues accompaniment

Essential dominant seventh chords and turnarounds
- 04
A useful minor pentatonic position and short blues phrases

Slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and call-and-response
- 06
Combining rhythm and lead ideas in a guided blues jam
Outcome: Play a basic blues progression and contribute simple lead phrases.

Julian Hoover brings over 30 years of guitar-playing experience and a BA in Jazz and World Music from San Francisco State University, with live and studio work across blues, rock, funk, jazz, gospel, reggae, and acoustic styles.
His teaching focuses on practical, enjoyable learning with clear explanations and real music.

Do I need an electric guitar?
No. Everything in this course is designed for acoustic guitar. The blues sounds great on acoustic.
I know a few chords but have never played blues. Will I keep up?
Yes. We assume you can change open chords and we build the blues vocabulary step by step from there.
